Huaca de la Luna (The Moon Temple)
Outside the town of Trujillo, Peru lies the ancient Temples of the Moon & Sun. The Moon Temple was still being dug up as we speak - its a long process and they reckon it could be another 50 years before it is completely discovered. They are hoping to have it declared a UNESCO world heritage site soon!! Some 400m across lies the Sun temple, which has not been excavated yet due to lack of funds!!
This path leads up to a stepped pyramid, called Huaca del Sol which measures 1,250 feet in length and towers 135 feet above the surrounding plain - this makes it the tallest adobe structure of the Americas. lt is calculated that around 50 million sun-dried, mud bricks (or “adobes”), were used in its construction. It looks like a mound of dirt because it has been covered by sand caused by El Niño.
This is what is on the other side of the hill of dirt, on the left hand side they have excavated doen almost 10 meters of sand and uncovered a wall with designs like the one below on it!!
On the top right you can only see part of the wall because they have yet to dig down due to lack of resources!! It was quite cool s they were still excavating the temple while we were there and will be digging for a long time to come as they are not fully sur how deep down it does!!
They reckon the site was site was built at the time of the Moche culture (100 BC-650 AD) and they were used as burial sites and to make sacrifices to the Gods!!
This is the view from the top of the Moon temple, acroos in the distance is the Sun Temple which has yet to be discovered!! Who know what treasures lie inside............although grave robbers have taken everything!!
In between in the town where people lived in mud brick homes - as u can see they are still uncovering what lies beneath!
